Mario Giacomelli - Puglia

From the 25th of March until the 16th of May the Atlas Gallery in Dorset Street, London, hosts a magnificent photographic exhibition by Mario Giacomelli, the Italian photographer perhaps best 'known to the world as "Puglia."

This is a much celebrated series of pictures taken in the Gargano in 1957. The images strike for the strong contrasts and the many details. They are snapshots of a past life but not remote that reminds us how we were and at the same time show an ancient and vital Puglia, It’s a pleasant journey back in time.

Giacomelli said about this series of photos: “watching these images is like reading in the folds of men, in the veins of the country; it is like feeling the bark of the plant, the fatigue on earth, the sounds of celebration, the games in front of the church, sunny old walls, the society and friendship, the serene leisure life, ceremonial and religious events, the prestige and vitality', which are reflected on the skin of a civilization ".
